I'm not sure how to tackle the problem because it just happens randomly. I hasten to add that intellisense was working fine prior to that, in spite of the size of the project.
There are few external declaration files - less than 5 I'd say.

The code itself is relatively self-contained. Judging by the nature of the problem, I don't think this will happen in a small project. When I say project it's a VS solution with a number of TypeScript projects. It is almost certainly to do with the size of the project. However, this week I updated to VS 2017 15.4 RTM and TypeScript 2.5.3. I didn't report the issue earlier because I assumed it might be something to do with VS being in preview mode. I had just downloaded a preview version of Visual Studio 2017 at that time. I believe these problems started around TypeScript 2.4.1 back in June.
